When you open your mind to new possibilities, too many opportunities may present themselves at once. Common sense should tell you to Focus on the one that takes you closer to your goals faster.<br />

Les Brown said: &#8220;The only limits to the possibilities in your life tomorrow are the buts you use today.&#8221;<br />
 <br />
Fear of uncertainty is probably the single biggest obstacle to your success. Being open to new ideas can eliminate your fear of uncertainty.<br />

&#8220;Being open to new possibilities&#8221; is a mindset that will take you from where you are to where you want to be.</p>

My wife and I got a visit from her mom, and the two of us soon got into a heated argument in front of my computer in our living room. The tension escalated until my mother-in-law burst out: &#8220;So, you think you can work from home, never leave the house for a normal job and still expect to make good money?!&#8221;  &#8220;Yes, that&#8217;s right&#8221;, I replied. &#8220;That&#8217;s exactly what I intend to do!&#8221;</p>
<p>Little did I know that my online journey towards success would be so rough. In hindsight, I have no problem admitting that I thought it would be way easier, than it turned out to be. I have lost count of all the times I stayed up until 4 or 5 in the morning, looking for the &#8220;magic pill&#8221; &#8211; the one opportunity that would catapult me towards success and stop the mouth of my mother-in-law. (Let me add that we have a great relationship these days, and I really appreciate her.)</p>
<p>I was tempted to bang my head against the wall more than once, during these frustrating years. If I had just discovered the important concept of ongoing, residual income earlier, I would have had less grey hairs by now! Here are 2 valuable tips, that would have made my journey much easier, and that can be put to use in most businesses.</p>
<p><span id="more-236"></span></p>
<p>1. It takes the same effort to make a one-time sale, as it does to make an &#8220;ongoing sale&#8221;.</p>
<p>By &#8220;ongoing sale&#8221;, I simply mean a membership or subscription type of sale, that lets you profit from your customer each and every month. Let me illustrate this by a real-life example:</p>
<p>The story is told of an Indian woman targeting the Indian population in New York, to tell them they could get cheaper phone calls to India via a certain telephone company that she represented. The Indian population in New York is currently 0.4%, so this meant she had several hundred thousand indians she could target. This woman did NOT get an hourly pay from the phone company, but rather a small percentage of the phone bill each time one of her customers made a phone call to India.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m convinced you start to see where I&#8217;m headed with this story. Before long, this smart woman was able to make an ongoing monthly income that surpassed what she would have received in a regular 9-5 job.</p>
<p>This exact same principle can be used, and is being used, by companies doing business online. Always remember that it takes the same effort to make the one-time sale (that pays you today and is gone tomorrow), that it does to make an ongoing sale.</p>
<p>If I had only focused on this type of income from my first day online, I would have been able to succeed that much faster. Learn from my huge mistake. Having been heavily involved in affiliate marketing, I can testify that the most stable part of my income to this very day, is commissions from subscriptions and memberships.</p>
<p>One of these income streams is from a leading auto responder company. As you probably know, auto responder services are paid monthly, and the people using auto responders continue do so for months and often years. This means I get paid every month as well. A brand new check every month, without lifting a finger.</p>
<p>2. Most Companies Can Add an Ongoing Revenue Stream to their Business.</p>
<p>With a little creativity, it is possible to add ongoing income streams to most businesses out there. The list of examples is endless. If you sell DVDs, you can create a &#8220;DVD of the Month&#8221;-Club. Pay per click experts who started out by releasing a simple Guide, have now added monthly coaching to their business.</p>
<p>A web video expert that I know of, created an excellent course and released it with a price tag of about $300. It didn&#8217;t take long until he shifted his focus and chose a better, more profitable model for his business. The only way you can get his course nowadays, is by joining his Club and pay him monthly. What you get back is a packed member&#8217;s area with an ever expanding library of updated, quality content.</p>
<p>Learn from these examples. Figure out ways to add ongoing income streams to your business. Hard work is good. Smart work is better.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve always been fascinated by quotes. The reason is probably that quotes often summarize a lot of wisdom in just a few words.</p></div>
<p>Here is one quote that I believe will be helpful for any business owner trying to do business online:</p>
<p>&#8220;Your ability to focus is the most important skill you can ever develop!&#8221; (Brian Tracy)</p>
<p>Did you hear that? Claiming that something (whatever it is) is the most important skill, is a pretty bold claim. Wouldn&#8217;t you agree?</p>
<p>While we&#8217;re at it, let&#8217;s listen to one more quote concerning focus, or rather the lack of it. This one comes from famous business philosopher Jim Rohn: &#8220;Many people don&#8217;t focus very well. That&#8217;s the reason they ultimately end up broke and disillusioned.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s no secret that the failure rate in business is pretty high. Could this have something to do with a lack of focus? You bet!</p>
<p>Let me give you a couple of examples. About 2 years ago, I bought a course teaching how to build content rich websites in order to get free search engine traffic. This traffic could then be monetized in different ways.</p>

<p>I decided to send a quick email to the product creator. Reason being, I wanted to hear his opinion about the views and claims made by a handful of extremely well known internet marketers. His answer baffled me. Or rather the absence of a useful answer.</p>
<p>Yes, he answered my email, but he didn&#8217;t really have a clue about a single one of those famous internet marketers. He didn&#8217;t even know their names. Then it dawned on me: This product creator, that it would be tempting for me to label &#8220;ignorant&#8221;, did not waste his energy on learning this and learning that.</p>
<p>He had simply found an online business formula that worked and decided to forget about everything else. This way he could write article after article, and create site after site, making sure his income soared.</p>
<p>Personally I made the big mistake of becoming &#8220;knowledge rich&#8221;, but &#8220;action poor&#8221;. I&#8217;ve got to admit I&#8217;ve struggled with this problem for years, and it makes me feel kind of stupid. I have discovered, though, that I am not alone.</p>
<p>In a chaotic world, it&#8217;s all too easy for focus to become blurred.</p>
<p>Here are 2 things you can do that will help you focus better and make more money as a result:</p>
<p><strong>1. Stop Checking Your Email 32 Times a Day.</strong></p>
<p>Yes, I know you&#8217;re probably dependant on email. Who isn&#8217;t? But I also know of some smart marketers who have committed themselves to NOT check their inbox, until they have gotten the most important tasks for the day out of the way. Their productivity sky rockets as a result of this simple strategy.</p>
<p>I can hear some people objecting already: &#8220;Wait a minute! What if there&#8217;s an extremely important email that I need to pay attention to!&#8221; Well, let me ask you back: &#8220;When was the last time you received an email that was so important you couldn&#8217;t let it wait for a few hours!&#8221; I rest my case.</p>
<p>The fact is: Email has become an obstacle, rather than a resource in many cases. Reason being that a lot of people start their day answering and sending emails for hours, and when their work day is over, several important tasks are left for some other day.</p>
<p>&#8220;Joe Average&#8221; will continue spending a big part of his day on his email. While &#8220;Mike Focus&#8221; will get the money making tasks done, and check his email after that. This will make sure he gets the most out of each day and is an extremely important success factor.</p>
<p>Please don&#8217;t get me wrong: I&#8217;m not saying you can&#8217;t succeed if you start your day taking a quick look at your email. Just don&#8217;t get stuck there, while you forget your most important activities for the day.</p>
<p>Best selling author Danny Cox once said: &#8220;If you&#8217;ve got a frog to swallow, don&#8217;t look at it too long. If you&#8217;ve got more than one to swallow, swallow the biggest one first!&#8221; In other words, tackle your most important priorities immediately.</p>
<p>I once heard a successful marketer revealing one of his little secrets:</p>
<p>On his lap top he had put a little note that he couldn&#8217;t help but see each and every workday. What was on the note? Two words only: &#8220;Laser Focus!&#8221;.</p>
<p><strong>2. Learn the Power of the Word NO!</strong></p>
<p>The telephone can be an insidious intrusion. It&#8217;s so easy to let the phone control your day. If you need to set aside two or three hours for uninterrupted work, unplug it! At least if you&#8217;re in a business where this can be done. (If you&#8217;re a doctor, you obviously need to answer the phone!)</p>
<p>Remember to turn off your cellular as well. Voice mail and answering machines can help you avoid these annoying interruptions. If you want to boost your income, there are times you should shut the world out. Most people don&#8217;t do this. Go one better. Best of luck.</p>

<p>Momentum…</p>
<p>Business is all about getting the momentum up and running…and it just keeps rolling and growing.</p>
<p>I see a lot of disappointed newbies who never seem to get that momentum going.</p>
<p>One of the reasons this happens is they just dip their toe in the water. They are just testing the business, but they never go all out. They never jump in the water. It never becomes sink or swim to them.</p>
<p>I remember when I started online…it wasn’t a maybe. Maybe this would work out. It was either this works out…or I don’t know what I’m going to do. I came at it with a desperation inside of me. It had to work. There wasn’t any other option. I had already tried everything else and it wasn’t working.</p>
<p>And you know what…I’M GLAD I was in that position.</p>
<p><span id="more-198"></span></p>
<p>If I wasn’t, I’ll bet you I would have gave up when it got hard. I would have gave up if a product I sold didn’t make any sales. I would have given up when people complained about the sales email I sent them (that old line of everything on the web should be free was told then too).</p>
<p>There is ALWAYS another opportunity to give up. There is always another distraction to grab your attention. There is always a reason to lose your focus.</p>
<p>It’s that dedication and that desperation that keeps you moving and keeps you going.</p>
<p>Sometimes we see disagreements about whether you have to be truly passionate about your subject or not. While I believe passion is an important element, it’s not vital. I’ve seen many people build successful businesses when the subject wasn’t really one they absolutely loved. I’ve seen people who are very successful who do something totally different with their free time.</p>
<p>But I don’t believe I’ve ever seen someone who succeeded without passion or desperation.</p>
<p>Passion is a motivator. So is desperation. Both of them can cause you to overcome obstacles and keep working when it doesn’t seem like anything is going the way you want. Both can keep you moving forward.</p>
<p>Both allow you to get that momentum moving for you.</p>
<p>This is where so many people have trouble with internet business. This isn’t a job. On a job, if you work an hour, you get paid for the hour. If you work 50 hours this week, you get your normal pay and then you get overtime pay also since you went over the mystical 40 hours.</p>
<p>Online business is more like investing. And I’m not talking about day trading or short-term investments. It’s more similar to buy-and-hold investments. But instead of investing your money, you’re investing your time…to see your investment grow and payoff in the future.</p>
<p>Work 20 hours this week…and you might not see any return at all. But you’re building the foundation, the knowledge, and the experience so you can be paid MUCH MORE months or years into the future.</p>
<p>The other issue is that it’s not a nice easy growth line either. Wouldn’t it be great if your income grew with a beautiful curve of you earn $100 this month, $200 next month, then $400, then $800, and so on as it multiplied nice and neatly each month.</p>
<p>You’ll have plateaus and breakthroughs. Everyone does. For the brand new beginner it’s earning that first dollar or making that first sale. It seems so tough to get over the hurdle. Then you break it…time for celebration. Most people then move up to a few hundred dollars per month and it seems like they get stuck here.</p>
<p>Usually the next level is broken through once you understand something new about your customer, how to increase your conversion, and then expand out your marketing.</p>
<p>Then you move to the several thousand a month level. That’s a nice income. For some it’s just a little extra money while others it might enable them to leave their job to focus more on this business. Either way it is often another sticking point in business. Once you breakthrough here another one occurs in the ten to twenty thousand a month level. And so on.</p>
<p>Yet we like to think in nice looking graphs that just flow up one month after the next. I went looking for a photo to display here to show what I’m explaining…and it was TOUGH. Why? Because all the graph photos I found were showing that nice regular growth for every business. It’s how we think, but it’s NOT how things work out in reality.</p>
<p>In fact, the plateau effect can be seen in almost everything – not just business. For example if you’re losing weight you’re experience the same effect. You lose weight for a while and then all of sudden everything seems to stop for a while. At these points you can’t give up. Instead you need to switch something up and refire your desire to get it moving again.</p>
<p>And that’s where it comes down to in business. How bad do you want it?</p>
<p>Once you’ve started seeing some success, do you still have that desperation or passion pushing you to reach the next level? Are you willing to do what it takes to get moving again.</p>
<p>Because it all comes back to that momentum…that sink or swim marketing attitude.</p>
<p>Are you just dipping your toe in the water or are you jumping in?</p>

<p>Google figured out a formula for how to index web sites in a way that satisfied the searcher looking for information on a certain topic. The Overture searcher didn&#8217;t get the same quality results returned, and the word started to spread about Google.</p>
<p>We know the rest of the story, but what can you as a business owner learn from Google overtaking Overture? Below are 2 vitally important things you can take away from this real life success story.</p>
<p><span id="more-145"></span></p>
<p>1) Do whatever you can to become the king of your &#8220;mountain&#8221;</p>
<p>Why should customers buy from you and not your competition? You need to be able to answer this question. You need a USP (Unique Selling Proposition).</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s the good news: You don&#8217;t necessarily need your product or service to be superior in and of itself.</p>
<p>It can actually be enough that you come up with a Guarantee that your competition does not give to their customers.</p>
<p>Just take a look at Domino&#8217;s pizza. Domino&#8217;s never claimed that their pizza tasted better than everyone else&#8217;s pizza, but they came up with a clever guarantee that made them the dominant player in the pizza market.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the guarantee Domino&#8217;s developed: &#8220;Fresh, hot pizza in 30 minutes or less…or it&#8217;s free!&#8221;</p>
<p>Let me give you another real life example:</p>
<p>Perry Marshall mentioned the following interesting story a while back:</p>
<p>ASEPCO is a Company that makes $4000 valves that go into super-expensive tanks that manufacture bio-active medicines. A few years ago, CEO Tom Hoobyar developed the following ballsy guarantee, which is still there today:</p>
<p>Lifetime Free Replacement Of Any ASEPCO Tank Valve, No Matter Who Breaks It! Sometimes a tank is dropped – sometimes a valve gets hit by a forklift. No matter how a valve is broken, or who&#8217;s at fault, we will replace it free! No arguments. No excuses. Just a free replacement valve as fast as we can make it.</p>
<p>ASEPCO used that guarantee as a benchmark for their products and achieved 90% market share.</p>
<p>Did you hear that? 90% market share thanks to a solid guarantee!</p>
<p>I&#8217;m convinced that any product or service owner can come up with some type of sales boosting guarantee. Think seriously about this, and don&#8217;t give yourself rest until you have come up with a guarantee that your competition does not give to their customers.</p>
<p>Just don&#8217;t be stupid and promise things that will threaten your business financially. Bit don&#8217;t worry. there are lots of ways of coming up with a guarantee, without risking your business.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s look at one more thing we can learn from Google:</p>
<p>Lately lots of Pay Per Click advertisers have become increasingly frustrated by all the &#8220;Google Slaps&#8221; (meaning Google refuses to run their ads, because the advertiser has got a popup on their site, or perhaps the site is &#8220;too thin on content&#8221;.</p>
<p>What a lot of PPC advertisers have failed to understand is that all Google is really doing is protecting one vital thing that their business hinges on: Trust.</p>
<p>If Google&#8217;s quality starts to deteriorate, people will stop using them because they&#8217;re not happy with the results they get back when doing a Google search.</p>
<p>You should learn from this as well.</p>
<p>We all know we&#8217;re in turbulent financial times, but there is another recession that very few talk about. We can call it: &#8220;The Recession of Trust&#8221;.</p>
<p>Because a lot of marketers have been dishonest, or at the very least have exaggerated the benefits of their products, the result has been a general skepticism against everyone who tries to sell anything.</p>
<p>2) You need to create trust to get more customers.</p>
<p>You need to be aware of this, because there are some very simple things you can do to overcome this &#8220;trust problem&#8221;.</p>
<p>Information marketers can give out a free sample of the first two chapters of their ebook for example, to prove to the buyer that he/she knows their stuff.</p>
<p>Dan Kennedy tells about a restaurant owner he consulted with, and the conclusion was this:</p>
<p>&#8220;If your food is as great as you tell me, give away one free meal to business people in your area, instead of running ads in the newspaper!&#8221;</p>
<p>The restaurant owner followed Kennedy&#8217;s advice and built a thriving business in record time, because people did come back to eat there again, thanks to the quality of the food.</p>
<p>You can learn from this. Whatever you do: Get people to trust you. You need that trust to secure the sale.</p>
