Fives in a box Business Philosophy

It happened to a teller in a bank on New York’s upper East Side.

A woman in a black coat approached his window and presented an ATM card only slightly less worn than her face. She wanted to withdraw 30 dollars.

The teller counted out three tens but the woman pushed the bills back. “Not my money,” she said. “My money is five dollar.”

The teller understood and replaced the three tens with six fives and the woman went happily on her way. To her, a bank was a place where they put your money into individual boxes. Since she had always deposited fives, those tens belonged to somebody else…

…and the point of my story is?

We’re so focused on what we know (for example our business philosophy) that we miss out on other things that might help us along the way.
